I know a couple of guys who are real weight conscious. Sometimes, we meet up for a drink and they look good...they've shed some pounds and feel and look just great. Then, a few weeks later, they'll be full of doom and gloom because the pounds have come back and they feel frumpy again.
I was kinda curious about why two such bright and intelligent men would go down this yo-yo dieting route. So, I asked them. Couldn't really understand why they'd lose weight and not keep it off and then have to start all over again with a different diet or exercise program. Surely, if it works, it works?
Seems not. One told me that he can't keep the pounds at bay because he has no self control. Said his problem was that he couldn't stop snacking after a while so a diet would work but then he'd screw it up. I told him maybe the diet wasn't working in the first place if it left him feeling hungry, but that didn't wash with him...he was convinced it was his fault.
The other guy told me that he couldn't lose weight because he had low self esteem. He'd talked to a few friends about his problems and they'd decided that he'd never be able to lose weight easily and permanently because he didn't believe he was able to.
Have to say, I was kinda shocked. They both hold down great jobs and seem like really tuned in guys. But, in just a couple of sentences they were telling me that they didn't actually feel good about themselves and were actually losing confidence even more as they went through life feeling just a little overweight.
This really set me thinking about the diet solutions they'd tried in the past (and believe me it sounded like they'd tried them all!).
