Types of Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS)

Technology

SMPS is a power supply that uses a switching regulator for controlling and stabilizing the output voltage by current supply to a smoothing capacitor on and off. It offers a higher power conversion and reduces the overall power loss.

It is extensively used in a variety of electronic equipment, including computers and others which require a stable and efficient power supply.

Advantages of SMPS:-

  • Efficiency - Little energy is dissipated in the form of heat; efficiency ranges from 68% to 96%.
  • High power density - Offers high power density and, regulated, reliable outputs instead of variations in input supply voltage
  • Compact - The small size of SMPS makes it more compact.

The different types of SMPS include the following such as:-

·  D.C. to D.C. Converter

·  Forward Converter

·  Flyback Converter

·  Self-Oscillating Flyback Converter

DC-DC Converter

In such electronic devices, the main power received from the AC main is resolved and filtered as high voltage DC. Thereafter, it changes at a tremendous rate of speed and is fed to the primary side of the step-down transformer.

Forward Converter

In a forward converter, the choke transfers the current. Also, the diode transmits the current through the OFF period of the transistor. Thus, the flow of current into the load occurs twice. The choke stores energy during the ON period. Some amount of energy is also permitted into the o/p load.

Flyback Converter

In this converter, energy is supplied throughout the ON period of the switch. And, when the button is in the open state, the energy is collapsed into the o/p voltage circuit.

Self-Oscillating Flyback Converter

In such devices, throughout the conduction time of the switching transistor, the flow of current primarily switches ramping up linearly with the angle equal to Vin/Lp.

There are few multi-feature power supplies that provide optimum utilization of energy combined with connectivity options to plug into the IoT platform. For example, WAGO Pro 2 Power Supply.
