Scaffolding systems play an important role in almost all types of construction projects. They have been used since its inception. Commonly used to provide access to workers or labors to reach heights, scaffolding systems can serve several purposes. There are different types of scaffolding systems available to select from. Some are used to support workers as well as their tools, while others are used to carry building materials like bricks, blocks, and so on.

In general, scaffolding system is made from steel or timber. They should be strong, stable, and durable. They should support workers and other construction materials placed on it.

Different types of Scaffolding System Used in Construction

Single scaffolding: As the name implies, it is primarily used for brick masonry. This type of scaffolding is also known as brick layer’s scaffolding. It includes standards, ledgers, putlogs, and more.

Double scaffolding: It is used for stone masonry and also known as mason’s scaffolding. In stone walls, it is quite difficult to make holes in the wall and support putlogs. Hence, two rows are created to make it strong.

Cantilever: In this type of system, standards are supported on a series of needles, and these needles are removed through holes in the wall. It is known as a single frame type. This type of structure is used in various conditions, including

  • When the ground does not support standards
  • When the ground near the wall is to be set free from traffic
  • When the wall’s upper part is under construction

Suspended: As the name suggested, the working platform is suspended from the top with the help of wire ropes, chains, and more. It can be increased or decreased according to the required level. In general, this type of structure is used for repair works, paintings, pointing, and more.

Trestle: This type of structure is used to support movable tripods or ladders. It can be used for indoor works like paintings, repairs, and so on.

Safway: Safway scaffolding is built to be used as a ladder. It is coated to help resist rust and scratches. There are three types of frames available, including 6’4” tall, 5’ tall, and 3’ tall frame. It comes with features like durability, increased strength, increased rigidity, and more.

Steel: It is constructed by steel tubes which are fixed together using couplers or fittings of steel. It is easy to construct or dismantle. It comes with great strength, durability, and fire resistance features. It is quite expensive but provides a high level of safety for workers. Hence, it is widely used.

Patented: This type of structure is also made up of steel, but it is equipped with special coupling and frames. It is a readymade system which is easily available in the market. This type of scaffolding can be arranged on brackets which is adjustable as per the required level.

Why are there different types of scaffolding system?

Sometimes, a specific type of scaffolding is widely used because it is readily available, and people are aware of it. However, there are different types of structures available to meet specific needs and requirements. Depending on where you are working, you can choose the right type of structure. One of the most common types is aluminum. It is lighter than steel and can be built faster and reduce labor cost.

In some countries, aluminum is expensive, and labor is affordable; hence they use wooden poles and bamboos. But, they might not be safe to use. Being a builder, one should choose the type of scaffolding that works best for their project and follow local regulations. Consider all these types of scaffolding structures and find the right one for your construction project.
