Digital Mobile Radio Market: An Insight On the Important Factors and Trends Influencing the Market

Technology

Digital mobile radio (DMR) is a worldwide open standard for digital radio developed by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Over the period of time, manufacturers and professional users of mobile radio system recognized that the current analog trunking standards requires updates with modern techniques that provide improved voice quality, improved authentication and encryption and improved channel efficiency. As a result of which, DMR standards were developed, it covers voice, data service and conformance testing. DMR aims to replace analog radio system with an affordable and low complexity digital radio system.

DMR radio system offers multiple benefits over analog radio system. DMR is an open standard which means it is not proprietary to any specific manufacturer. Moreover, it is backed by many leading radio manufacturers and component suppliers. As a result of which buyers can rely confidently on the long term supply and fetch benefits of the competition driven development. DMR gives clearer audio with reduced background noise since it converts voice information into digital data. One of the latest feature of DMR is intelligent audio in which the radio volume is adjusted automatically to match the environment’s noise level. DMR equipment also has single processing algorithm that helps in managing distortion.

Furthermore, DMR increases the existing capacity of 12.5 kHz channel with the help of time division multiple access technology.  A time division multiple access technology allows several radio users to share the same frequency channel. While the analog radio system uses the complete 12.5 KHz narrowband channel to deliver single communication, DMR digital radio system supports two independent calls simultaneously over the same channel. Digital technology is much more energy efficient than analog system. This typically means that DMR based equipment have much longer battery life than analog based equipment.

Professional/Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) Market: Drivers & Restraints

There are other related standards as well like TETRA, P25 and MPT-1327. And all these are based on open standards. However, these standards are very different from DMR. All the aforementioned standards are based on different protocols and target different markets. For instance, TETRA, P25 and MPT-1327 standards are largely used by public safety organization and are not technically compatible. Additionally, TETRA base station is approximately between half and one third compared to that of DMR radio system. A medium size TETRA may cost three to four time more than a DMR radio system. This makes DMR more efficient and competent than other related standards. The DMR also offers inherent security feature with encryption and authentication that makes the entire communication private and safe.

Many organizations around the globe have developed DMR based products thereby providing comprehensive communication solutions for number of radio system users. The digital mobile radio market is largely driven by the multiple benefits that the DMR standard provides to the professional mobile radio users. One of the vital capability of DMR product that has attracted the radio users is the communication security. Moreover, continuous development and addition of new features by the manufacturers is expected to increase the user base of DMR products.
