The If, What, and How of Solar Energy

Whereas many people are agreed that wind turbines for the home present a great alternative for a domestic power supply, many fewer have been able to translate this positive perception into implementation. The reasons for this state of affairs are probably as varied as there are power users. However, one reason for this inertia is the lack of practical information on what is required, including the costs involved. Generating your own power has an added benefit in that any excess power you realize can be sold to the electricity company.

There are several factors that you need to consider when setting up wind turbines for the home. The first is cost. Wind power is not exactly a new concept. This therefore means that the range of options in the market is quite broad each of which comes with its own price tag depending on sophistication, output and brand. Without a budget, you can make a wrong decision by paying too much for something you don't necessarily need. Set a budget with a certain level of acceptable deviation.

The next thing you must do when buying wind turbines for the home is to assess the environmental conditions around the house with a focus on wind strength. It would prove to be a grave mistake if you were to go the lengths of buying a wind turbine only to realize that you do not have sufficient wind to power it. The recommended wind strength that can adequately drive a wind turbine is a minimum of 10 mph. However, as you check the wind speed, pay attention to potential points of obstruction (wind breakers) such as tall buildings and trees. In such cases, height above ground will be important and will determine the height of the platform you will need.
