New free guide for weighing young people aims to help combat childhood obesity
British weighing scales manufacturer Marsden Group has launched a new free guide with the aim of highlighting the importance of weighing young children and reducing childhood obesity.
The guide strives to make the weighing process clear, safe and easy to follow. It covers areas from preparing to weigh, carrying out the procedure and recording the weight reading afterwards.
A Government report in 2016, reported in the Daily Mail, found more than one in three 10-11 year-olds and one in five children aged 4-5 were overweight or obese.
Weighing can be used as a guide to monitor whether a child is a healthy weight, growing correctly and can be the first or only sign of certain diseases.
Marsden Managing Director, Richard Black, said: “Marsden is the leading provider of weighing scales to NHS hospitals, and this brings with it a duty to ensure all children are weighed safely and accurately.
“It is vital that all stakeholders involved in the process - from the parent to the doctor - understand the importance a weight reading can have on a child’s health and growth.”
Marketing Director, David Smith, added: “Obesity in children is one of the greatest threats facing the NHS, and weighing is a critical stage in diagnosing the problem and solving the epidemic.
“Our guide takes you through the weighing process for a young person - from recommendations on how often they should be weighed, to how their weight is used to calculate drug dosages.
“We hope it will go some way to help combat childhood obesity.”
