It's about time, Verizon Revamps Prepaid Plans

Two of Verizon’s three prepaid plans are getting some major changes including an increase in the data amount!

Prepaid plans give customers the option to use the network of their choice without being tied down to an annual contract. As prepaid, monthly plans are becoming more popular, top US carriers are re-evaluating their plans and making changes. Verizon recently announced that they are increasing the amount of monthly data offered in two of their three prepaid smartphone plans.

Starting on May 15th, the data limit for Verizon’s $45 per month plan jumps from 1 GB to 2 GB, while the $60 plan has increased to 5 GB. That’s a significant increase for data heavy users who don’t need a multitude of data but yet still need more than just 1 GB. While they increased their data amounts, Verizon is offering an additional gigabyte of data for customers who enroll in AutoPay, bringing the cap up to 3 or 6 GB of data per month respectively. To sweeten the deal, the $45 plan comes with free texting to Mexico and Canada while the $60 plan comes with free calling and texting to both countries.

Verizon is still offering their basic plan with unlimited talk and text for $30 a month, but you don’t get a monthly data plan and will have to rely on WiFi. For customers who are still choosing a feature phone in 2016, Verizon sells an unlimited talk, text, and mobile web plan for what feels like an exorbitant $30 per month. At that rate, you might as well pay a little bit more to get a budget smartphone instead.

When compared to the other three service providers, Verizon’s prepaid plans are in the middle. AT&T offers nearly an identical service for their prepaid lines although with $5 off of the monthly bill rather than an additional gigabyte of data. T-Mobile currently offers the best data for the dollar on prepaid plans, with its $60 plan offering up to 10 GB of LTE data, although international calls and texts cost extra. Sprint sits a bit lower than the others with their higher costs, less data, and no included international plans. Regardless of the provider you choose, Verizon’s new plans are perfect for individuals looking to get a no-contract phone for cheap yet still have a decent amount of data to rely on as well as the reliability of the Verizon network.
