CV Writing – Land Your Dream Job

Jobs

This short guide will explain 2019 CV writing, with the aim of helping you land your dream job.

1.            Attention To Detail

This point is obvious, but still, many people submit their CVs without checking for grammatical or spelling errors. It is paramount to go through your work, and get all important details right; such as the spelling of someone’s name. Remember, CVs with spelling mistakes often end up in the recycle bin. You need to make sure your resume looks great.

For you to get it right, you should review the CV from the reader’s point of view. In other words, imagine you are the reader, what will make the CV appealing to you? Of course, it should be easy to read, well structured, short, and easy to read. The 3-step checklist below; will help you create a CV that will generate the impact it deserves:

•              Keep the sentences short and use bullet points where necessary

•              Check your spacing. This is important especially when it comes to long list job titles and tasks (most preferably 1.5 spacing or double spacing)

•              Ask a friend to go through your CV and ask for feedback.

2.            Make It Social

Bernard Kelvin Clive said, “a person’s digital footprint speaks volumes.” What did he mean by this? Well, it simply means that social media is predominant over all aspects of life. Therefore, if used correctly, especially in 2019, social media can play a powerful and important role in helping you get your dream job.

As such, you should consider including your social media handles into your professional detail section, as it may show your genuine interest in the industry. If you are engaging actively on social media about your industry; showcasing this may move you ahead of the competition.

NOTE: It is wise to only use this technique (including social media on your CV) if you are completely satisfied with your online digital footprint. If especially it gives a positive and a well-rounded impression of you. Remember, DO NOT direct your potential employers to your profile if you do not have anything to offer other than your photos and comments about your nights out.

3.            Bring Your Experiences To Life And Make It Work For You

A CV written in 2019 should go a bit further than simply creating a list of your work experience on a page. Remember, nobody is disputing that listing work experience is a terrible thing, but it is important to show how important it can be. To achieve this, follow the 4 tips below:

•              Focus On Most Recent And Relevant Roles (Experiences) – A job you did 10 years ago, which has LITTLE or NO relevancy to the job you are applying should have a shortlist of tasks. There is no point of wasting valuable space with the roles you did.

•              Make Your Experiences And Tasks Relevant The Job You Are Applying For – This is a great way to show your future employer that you know your role.

•              Bring Everything To Life – Show your future employer what you have achieved. Include all outstanding results and back your claims with stats or proof. The aim is to show how you made an impact and what you bring on the table. Therefore, including awards is a bonus.

•              Take Advantage Of Technology – We are living in a digital era, and you should make this work for you. There are many online resources today, and it has become easy to create a portfolio. This is not something only for designers, but also marketers, drivers, lawyers, and others can take advantage of.

4.            Go The Extra Mile

The truth is that sometimes having a great CV and relevant experience may not be enough to get you your dream job, because of high competition. This is where going the extra mile comes into play. What does this mean? Well, it simply means using your skills to do something else that will benefit both you and the other person. For example, taking part in any additional activities can really help you.

An activity such as mentoring – this will show that you are not only interested in using your skills to better yourself but others as well. Other activities may include, charity organizations, office sports team, team player, or ability to organize team-building activities may really help you stay ahead of the competition.
