“SEEING WORLD IN PIXEL SIZE”

Image sensors is a sensor that detects and conveys the information that constitutes an image. Image sensors are present in single shot digital cameras, digital video cameras, reverse parking in automobile, smartphones, and healthcare sector. When people purchase a digital imager, the primary metric they use as a comparison is the pixel array size, which is expressed in megapixels. The higher the megapixel count, the better the image quality, which is prevailing wisdom to most consumers. There are many more metrics to compare imagers that may give a better indication of performance than raw pixel counts. As silicon technology is advancing and improving, there is increase in the size of image sensor and decrease in the size of image sensor. Mainly, there are two image sensor technologies used globally; CCD (charge coupled device) or CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor). Both technologies have their own advantages and disadvantages. CMOS sensor consumes low battery and is faster as compared to CCD, and on the other hand, image quality of CCD sensor is far beyond CMOS though it consumes more power. CMOS technology is used widely in many sectors from smartphone to laptop, web came and so on where taking more battery power is restricted. CCD sensors are used in sectors such as healthcare (in laparoscopic surgery and so on) where image clarity and quality are a priority.

“SMARTPHONE’S HAS A NEW EYE CALLED IMAGE SENSOR”

Smartphone market is growing at a rapid pace. There are around 2.5 billion smartphone users in the world and this number is estimated to l double during the forecast period. Smartphones are equipped with many sensors such as image sensor, infrared sensor and so on. Smartphones are getting better in capturing images, as the quality of CMOS imager is augmenting. Nowadays, smartphones are equipped with dual back cameras, which enhance the quality and zoom power of any smartphone. According to OMR research, smartphones are estimated to have a major share in the global image sensor market during the forecast period. Face/ iris scanning, which uses image sensor, is one of the latest features used in smartphones. This feature works on an array of sensors designed to detail the users face or iris. It uses infrared light to capture the image of the object. Many smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Samsung Galaxy S 8, Apple I phone 10 and so on offer this feature.  Sony is working on its 3-layer BSI CMOS sensor with DRAM, by adding a DRAM layer to their chip. The company Sony claims that its new sensor can read a still image of around 19.3 million pixels in 1/120 of a second. The major advantages of this sensor’s speed are the reduction of focal plane distortion.

Image sensor technology is widening its wing span in almost every sector, from electronic to healthcare and manufacturing industries, hence constant development should take place in the image sensor technology. Apart from CMOS and CCD, other technologies, which have many advantages with lower limitations should also be introduced in the market by researchers and scientists. Image sensors are made of silicon and setting up such fabrication industry is a billion-dollar venture requiring huge amount. If prices of such sensors are low, the prices of the end product might be reduced for the end users. There are many strict regulations enforced by the government towards silicon fabrication industries as these kind of semiconductor industries produce huge amount of toxic substances. The industry should introduce certain technologies such as pollutant filters, through which harmful pollutants need to be reduced. In addition, augmented reality sector has a golden opportunity for image sensor to grow, and companies like Google Inc., Microsoft, NASA and so on are some of the few major AR players working on this technology.
