Sure, taking a pill will have some effect just as chemical fertilizers make plants grow and function. But again, this is true only when you focus on a small part of the picture. Chemical fertilizers help because the soil has usually already been destroyed through industrial agriculture's use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.So give your body what it needs- foods that undergo minimal processing. I'm not advocating a raw food diet, but try to buy and eat foods fresh and prepare them yourself. A hundred grams of carbohydrates from an apple and a hundred grams of carbs from a soda are not equal! The apple wins out! Keep this in mind when choosing foods to eat based on the balance of nutrients you think you need- don't blindly follow the specific nutrients such as potassium, protein, etc. Consider the sources you are getting these nutrients from.
Eating something close to what humans have eaten for thousands of years will make it more likely you are getting the nutrients you need in the form you need it- meaning your body will be able to absorb and use the nutrients. There is life in food, and in general this life seems to be processed out of it the more that is done to it. So don't rely too heavily on the nutritional data you find on a product's packaging.
Do buy foods based on your knowledge of the nutrients they contain. for example, you might prepare a meal of brown rice for carbs, chicken for protein and B vitamins, and steamed vegetables for other essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
