In an attempt to show people more than what they could see through naked eyes, engineers are working on augmenting reality. They are striving to achieve this by adding electronic systems to eyeglasses that would display data and images for enhancing overall viewing experience. Ulrich Simon, vice president of corporate research and technology at Carl Zeiss, believes in full augmentation. He also gave an example of surgeons and MRI of patients to supplement his belief. An MRI image of a patient overlaid on his body achieved thorough augmented reality would help surgeons to operate precisely and efficiently with the help of eyeglasses.

Simon confirmed that the idea of enhanced display using eyeglasses is not new as Google Glasses were introduced in 2012. But it did not gain momentum as flat lenses proved to be obstructive. “Why the Google Glass has issues is everybody sees you are wearing data glasses,” Simon said. Integration of the display with ordinary eyeglasses has an ability to make data glasses more alluring to consumers. He continued, “In the end, I would like to take my own glasses, my own prescription.”

As the degree of curvature of eyes of every person varies, it is challenging to create curved lenses. Zeiss believes that it can overcome this challenge by delivering light to the edge of the lens. This light would be controlled by electronics in the frame of glasses and optics. The next step would be to move light through lenses using total internal reflection. As a result, it would not escape from the glass, but reflect between the inner surfaces. This process would take place until it reaches a Fresnel lens covered on prescription lens. Fresnel lens, which is a variation on concentric circles, focuses beam from lighthouse to display image in front of eyes of a person without shining directly into eyes.

Zeiss showed a prototype version of glasses at The Consumer Electronics Show that took place in January 2015. Zeiss is in the middle of the talks with potential partners, who are interested in developing other parts of this glass, such as electronics, to make it consumer friendly. They have not made any commitments about the time of launch of this device in the market, but they are ready to increase production of lenses.
