Market Overview:

Ion exchange resins are the water-insoluble polymer matrix containing functional groups, which can be exchanged by the medium ions. These resins are white or yellowish in color. Resins are present in the matrix structure as porous beads, microporous beads, gel, powder, or sheet forms. Ion exchange resins are made by polymerization of monomers such as styrene, acrylic, or phenolic compounds.

Ion exchange resins find high application scope in different end-use industries such as industrial & municipal water treatment, hydrometallurgy & metal finishing, chemical & petrochemical, food & beverages, pharmaceutical, power industry, electronics, and others.

Ion exchange resins are categorized into different types based on functional groups present such as cation exchange resins, anion exchange resins, chelating resins, mix bed resins, adsorbent resins, catalysts, and others.

Cation exchange resins are sub-segmented into strong acid cation (SAC) and weak acid cation (WAC). Anion exchange resins are sub-segmented into a strong base anion and weak base anion. Strong acid cations generally contain nuclear sulphonic functional group, and weak acid cations contain carboxylic functional group on the resin structure. Strong base anions contain quarternary ammonium type 1 & type 2 functional group, and weak base anion contains tertiary amine or polyamine functional group on the resin structure.

Cation and anion exchange resins beads can be used together (mixed bed configuration) or in separate vessels (twin bed configuration), depending on the application. Adsorbent resins do not contain any functional group, and whole ion exchange process takes place by adsorption phenomenon by the resins such as a polyacrylic copolymer or polystyrene copolymer. Chelating resins are the special type of ion exchange resins containing functional groups such as fluoride selective, imminodiacetic acid, aminomethyl phosphoric, isothiouronium, methylene thiol, or polyhydroxy amine.

Growing applications of ion exchange resins in the pharmaceutical and food & beverage industry are also expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. A significant demand for ion exchange resins from power industry (both fossil and nuclear power plant) to ensure intake of good quality water, which is free from impurities & undesired materials that could contribute to scale & corrosion formation later in the system if not pretreated. The growth in the power industry on account of surging demand for electricity in developing as well as developed countries are expected to have a positive impact on market growth in the near future.

Ion exchange resins are also used in pharmaceutical applications such as in extraction and purification processes (such as enzymes, hormones, alkaloids, viruses, antibiotics), for the production of water for injectable, and as an active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) or excipients. Additionally, ion exchange resins are also used in the food & beverages industry for decolonization, softening, demineralization, decausticiser, deashing (sorbitol, glucose, dextrose, gelatin, and others).

Increasing demand for treated water from municipal and industrial applications such as water softening, water purification, demineralization in the Asia Pacific, Latin America, and GCC countries are the key driver of the global ion exchange resins market. The strong mining industry in China, U.S., Russia, Australia, and Morocco are expected to drive the global ion exchange resins market over the forecast period.

Stringent regulations by European Commission and EPA against the use of chemicals in water treatment for industrial, commercial, and institutional applications are likely to hamper the growth of the ion exchange resins market to some extent during the forecast period.

Regional Analysis

The global ion exchange resins market on the basis of the region is segmented into five regions namely Asia Pacific, Latin America, North America, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.

Asia Pacific was the largest and fastest growing market for ion exchange resins in 2017 owing to growing application of ion exchange resins in the end-use industries such as industrial & municipal water treatment industry, hydrometallurgy & metal finishing, food & beverages, pharmaceutical, power industry, electronics, and others and is expected to witness an exponential growth over the forecast period.

Latin America is also expected to show rising demand for ion exchange resins over the forecast period due to huge scope for water treatment, growing construction activities, and emerging mining industry.

North America is expected to be the second largest market for ion exchange resins and is expected to show a considerable demand over the forecast period. End-use industries such as hydrometallurgy & metal finishing, chemical industry, food & beverages, pharmaceutical industry are expected to drive the ion exchange resins market.

Europe is expected to show steady demand for ion exchange resins over the forecast period. End-use industries such as mining industry, chemical industry, microelectronics industry are expected to drive the ion exchange resins over the forecast period.

The Middle East & Africa is expected to show rising demand of ion exchange resins over the forecast period 2018-2023 due to growing applications in end-user industries such as chemical & petrochemical, mining, power, and construction industry.
