Gallium Nitride Market Analysis and Industry Report (2019-2029)

Market-Research
BIS Research's picture

Gallium nitride technology is poised to grow at a considerable rate. GaN wafers undergo the epitaxy process in combination with the most suitable substrate material for deposition in layers. GaN-on-Si is the most cost-friendly and favorable choice for commercial usage because the cost of Si is very less in comparison to SiC and diamond. GaN-on-Sapphire is mostly adopted for optoelectronics applications and is one of the mature markets. GaN-on-SiC is the most suitable and technologically advanced choice of substrate used in RF applications such as 5G and military and defense, where cost is not the primary influencing factor for adoption.

Gallium nitride is widely used in the high-end product and commercial products of the companies in the semiconductor market. Gallium nitride is used in various applications, such as RF devices, power devices, and optoelectronics. The most widely adopted type of substrate for these applications is GaN-on-Si. Though GaN-on-SiC offers excellent performance, the material is not widely adopted in the market due to its high price.

GaN-on-SiC

GaN-on-SiC is one of the most desirable technologies that is set to rule the market. However, to date, GaN-on-SiC has a low volume of production and is considered as a niche technology due to its high substrate cost. The cost of producing silicon carbide substrates is considerably high and requires lots of energy for material growth. Thus, GaN-on-SiC wafers will remain high in price and will take time to enter into the mainstream commercialized market. The primary accepted application of GaN-on-SiC wafers is military & defense, cellular, and space applications to date. GaN-on-SiC material is expected to grow in RF applications due to its triple thermal conductivity property and compact integration size when compared with GaN-on-Si. For commercial applications, silicon substrates are still being used in the industry because the SiC substrate adds up extra dollars to GaN wafer, which is not suitable for bulk production. Some of the companies working on GaN-on-SiC are Qorvo and Wolfspeed.
