Anything other than water molecules is defined by law as “contaminant” (EPA) Some of them are are harmful, while others are harmless.
Drinking water always has some amount of contaminants, they does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk, but they may be harmful if consumed at certain levels (Safe Drinking Water Act). The general contaminants categories:
- Physical contaminants impact the physical appearance of drinking water: sediment from soil erosion in river water, organic particles, etc.
- Chemical contaminants include bleach, pesticides, metals, etcetera.
- Organisms in water are biological contaminants: viruses, bacteria, parasites, and protozoan.

In the 21th century even natural spring water may not me safe enough for all practical purposes.
