Several phone carriers offer great discounts for educators and students on various devices and plans throughout the year, especially around the end of summer before students go back to school. T-Mobile is among the US carriers who offer these great discounts and in fact, they are currently giving out coupon codes, which are good for $48 off of a new smartphone or tablet. Sounds too good to be true right? Well, before you get your discount code, there are a few things you need to be aware of regarding the deal.

To qualify, you’ll need to verify that you actually are a student or teacher by submitting your name, email address, school name and ZIP code, and possibly some “additional documentation” as well. Now in terms of the fine print, the offer excludes devices that cost less than $100 so you won’t be able to get one of T-Mobile’s affordable devices for super cheap but you can at least save some money on a decent device. Additionally, the fine print states “new services required” meaning that the coupon doesn’t apply to device upgrades and therefore, you’ll need to activate a new line in order to use the code.

The deal is only available through T-Mobile’s website and only applies to US college students as well as students in K-12 and college staff. Once confirmed that you are a college staff member or student, T-Mobile will give you an instant coupon code good for a one-time $48 discount. Unfortunately, availability of the promotion is exclusive to their website so this deal cannot be combine with the carrier’s other offers like their recently released buy one get one free deal on select smartphones.

Now while some may not consider $48 to be a huge discount, I remember being a college student and how every little bit helps, especially towards the price of a new phone that costs at least $100. So if you’re a college student or if you’re a school staff member, you can get a device (that costs more than $100) for at least a semi-reasonable discount. If you’re thinking of switching to T-Mobile or you know someone who is, this is definitely an offer to keep in mind – although there are other offers available as well including their BOGO promotion.
