The long awaited announcement from Samsung is finally here. At MWC this past week, Samsung officially announced their new flagships, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, and by the looks of them, there are definitely some significant improvements. Both phones will look and sound familiar to the previously leaked information from the past few months. In case you missed the leaks or refused to look at them so you were not disappointed, here’s what to expect.
The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will both run Android 6.0 Marshmallow and will be powered by octa-core Snapdragon 820 processor in the US. The devices also come with 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable by microSD card up to 200 GB! The Galaxy S7 sports a 5.1 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 display whereas the Galaxy S7 Edge is slightly larger featuring a 5.5 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 Edge Screen display.
Both devices offer a dual 12 megapixel rear camera sporting smart optical image stabilization while the front camera is a 5 megapixel shooter. The best part about the new cameras is that they are flush with the back of the device and are not protruding like they were in the S6/S6 Edge. The Galaxy S7 has a 3,000 mAh battery and the S7 Edge is slightly larger offering a 3,600 mAh battery. Both phones feature faster charging on wired and wireless charging compatible with WPC and PMA. In terms of supported payment methods, the new S7 devices include NFC and MST. In general, the devices also support Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5 GHz), MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, ANT+, USB 2.0, and feature a NFC Fingerprint scanner and Barometer.
Samsung has added some great improvements to their new Galaxy S flagship devices in just about every way possible. Not only will the S7 and S7 Edge come in multiple color options, they will also include the return of microSD support, feature better cameras, an always on display, a new internal cooling system, and much more all while remaining dust and water resistant. I don’t know about you but it definitely sounds like these new flagships will be worth the money.
For interested customers on the T-Mobile network, the phone carrier announced that they will carry both devices and if customers pre-order one of the new devices on a qualifying plan, they will get a free Samsung Gear VR, a 6 pack of VR games, and a free year of Netflix. If this is what T-Mobile is offering customers in terms of the new devices, I’m excited to see what the other carriers offer! Pricing and availability have yet to be announced but the new S devices are expected to launch by mid-March with pre-orders opening up around February 23rd.
