In Denmark, there aren’t any diamonds or rubies to be found underground. On the other hand, you will find “Nordic gold” - amber, hidden deeply in the North Sea, which spurts out these nature treasures during the storms and deposits them on the Danish coastlines.
Until the middle ages, amber was in very popular demand in the world and Danish traders offered the finest pieces that had been washed ashore at the North Sea. Jewelry designers use amber stones to make beads and other elements, and it was very popular in the Danish and other European royal families.
In particular, the Greeks believed that amber possessed supernatural qualities and called it ’the tears of the gods’; the Romans used amber in truth serums; and in Denmark amber was considered to have healing powers and used for various kinds of ailments, and it was widely used in cosmetics and modern medicines.
