Have you heard of LED filament/carbon filament lamps? Does the name sound strange to you? Then we would like to start with the beginning: of course, you all know that Edison invented the light bulb. In the meantime, we have all discovered that incandescent bulbs are energy consumers and that is why it is only good that we have switched to LED bulbs. These lamps may be energy efficient, but in the eyes of many people, they are not as cozy as the old-fashioned light bulbs. A solution has finally been found for this problem: the LED filament lamps. These both handy and stylish lamps use the latest LED technology and still have the appearance and warmth of the classic light bulb.

How can this be achieved?


This special effect can now be achieved by LED filament/carbon filament lamps such as, for example, the so-called COG LEDs that can reach a light angle of 360 ° in combination with real warm light. The result can be compared to that of a real old-style light bulb, which ensures that you get really cozy light. Certainly, from a distance of a few meters, these lamps are indistinguishable from authentic light bulbs.


Can LED filament lamps be used in the same fittings as traditional incandescent lamps?


This is an understandable question. Although the technology is constantly being developed, it is sometimes not possible for the consumer to follow all developments. Or in other words: we cannot afford to buy new adapted luminaires or devices with every new development. Many consumers still use chandeliers and lamps that have been developed for traditional incandescent lamps and are generally less compatible with LED lamps. This is not only due to the size of the fitting but also to the model and the distribution of the light as we are used to with somewhat older fixtures. Thanks to the LED filament/carbon filament lamps or COG LEDs, it is no longer necessary to worry about this.


Where do the LED filament lamps come from?


LED filament lamps were first developed by the Japanese company Ushio. These special lamps made a real breakthrough in the field of LED technology. When designing the original USHIO U-LED lamp, 6 carbon filaments (filaments) were used to simulate the conventional incandescent lamp, and 3 LED chips were needed to ensure that the light was bright enough to make the comparison. can withstand, this corresponds to 3 watts.


But how is the LED filament lamp produced?


This is really a special product! Unlike regular LED bulbs that are packed together behind a square metal plate, the LED chips of the Filament lamp are encapsulated in a translucent column of glass or synthetic sapphire, which is finished with a layer of phosphorus. This application of a layer of phosphorus is what we call COG. This is where the name COG comes from. This acronym stands for Chip-On-Glass, or 'chip on glass'. The column itself has a diameter of only 1.5 mm, but the length can go up to 30 mm. The LED filaments are formed after encapsulation (the COG process).
Thanks to this technology it becomes possible to let the light shine in all possible directions and obtain the same effect that consumers are used to from incandescent lamps.


In which colors are the LED filament lamps available?


Consumers currently have the choice between two variants: soft warm light or white warm light. The color of the light depends here on the color of the LED chips used: red chips provide warm yellow light and blue for white light.


LED filament becomes less warm than regular LED lamps!


LED filament lamps do better when it comes to minimizing heat development. After approximately 2 hours of burning, these lamps only reach a temperature of 35 to 36 ° Celsius. You will certainly not burn your fingers! This is a very big improvement compared to the conventional light bulb. The LED filament/carbon filament lamp produces only 15 mA of current, and so much less heat is generated than with the conventional LED lamps that generate 200 mA of current. The LED filament lamp has a larger thermal surface and uses the same noble gas as a traditional incandescent lamp with tungsten filaments. This makes it possible to use ordinary glass in production, and in this way this new LED lamp is closer to the traditional incandescent lamp.


The LED filament lamp is accompanied by efficient energy use


These lamps use the latest LED technology. This technology is 90% more efficient than halogen lamps or conventional incandescent lamps. In other words: an LED filament lamp of 4 Watt can stand the comparison with an incandescent lamp that consumes 40 Watt. These lamps are definitely recommended for those who want to save on his or her energy bill!


Last but not least: the lifespan


In addition to being very energy efficient, these LED filament lamps also last longer. They may look a lot like light bulbs, they last 15 times longer. On average, they can handle around 30,000 burning hours compared to 2,000 hours with an ordinary light bulb.
