Although the merchant navy name resembles the Indian Navy, it is not a part of Navy. It's completely a commercial marine fleet. The Merchant Navy works to transport goods and passengers from one place to another by using passenger ships, cargo ships, containers, oil, and refrigerated ships and many other ships. Shipping services are operated by companies of both government and private sectors.

To operate the fleet, there is merchant navy eligibility for trained professionals from technical teams to crew members, who handle ship operations, technical maintenance and provide many services to the passengers. That's why the merchant navy is popular as a catchy career for the youth.

Merchant navy work
The entire work of the Merchant Navy is divided into three parts in the form of decks, engines and service departments. Professionals like Captains, Chief Officers, Third Officers, and Junior Officers serve their services in the deck wing. Similarly, the engine department includes services of professionals such as Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, Third Engineer, Fourth Engineer, Electrical Officer, and Junior Engineers. Provide professional kitchens, laundry and passenger services such as steward, diver, the light keeper, nurse, nautical surveyor, etc. on the ship under the service department of the merchant navy. In the deck department, there are also many specialized staff in the form of "Ratings," which contribute to different tasks.

Career Options for Marches Navy:
You can do a 1-2 year diploma course such as Pre-C Training for Personnel, Deck Ratings, Engine Ratings, and Salon Ratings after you pass the 10th. These courses are of 3-4 months. At the same time you can do the course of Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Graduate Mechanical Engineers, after 12th. After 12th, only students can do this course from merchant navy colleges in India who have studied from the science stream.


Selection Process
Students have to pass JEE for a Nautical Science or Marine Engineering degree course. After this, for BSc Nautical Science, TS Chanakya, Mumbai, and Marine Engineering courses get admission in MERI, Kolkata.

Medical fitness is also cleared before entry into the course. For this, the site must be 6/6. There is also a direct entry for Direct Entry Merchant Navy. 12th pass students from Physics, Chemistry, and Maths can get admission in this field as Deck Cadet. Students here receive training while working. Similarly, graduate candidates in Mechanical, Electrical and Technology Engineering can join merchant navy as Engine Cadet / Fifth Engineer / Junior Engineer. Such students have to do pre-course training courses in the beginning.
