Internet seems magical to kids as they can watch their favourite cartoons and videos repeatedly. They can download their favourite games and even the templates for colouring. But there are quite a few things that children do not know. They are:

  • Viruses
  • Social networking etiquettes
  • Online privacy
  • Safety and security issues
  • Phishing

Because of these reasons children are easily victimized by the perpetrators. This way not only the children suffer, but most of the time the whole family is harmed because of a single mistake.

What do you need to teach your children about online privacy:

These are the few things which you as a parent need to teach your children about online privacy and internet safety. Teaching them now would be better if you do not want them to be taught by the bad experiences.

  • Children are fascinated by even the less charming things. They get excited when they see something out of routine happening. Before providing them access to the internet, start discussing tout the online safety. Make them realize that  the world of internet goes parallel with the real world. There are both safe and unsafe things in these worlds. Teach them to avoid threats just like you teach them to ignore strangers. They as kids will be using internet under your supervision, so make the most out of it and widen their brains about the unsafe things. So, when they start using internet independently, and start creating social accounts, they would mentally be prepared how to set the passwords, and how to tackle the bad situation.
  • Online presence and conversation is exactly like a face-to-face meeting. Many of the kids think that the apparently screen distance is what that makes them invisible and gives them the right to bash any one. So many of them use abusive language,  cyberbully, etc. While some kids get dominant, the other belong to the group that fall victims. Teach both the groups how to behave properly and normally so that both of them do not face psychological issues in future.
  • Let them know how to use Antiviruses, and how important it is to scan your machine regularly. Teach them not to put their personal information on any website or share the information with any person offering a prize or whatever.
  • Teach them who the hackers are and how do they attack and enter your private zone. When they know that hackers are no less than thieves that enter the house by breaking your computer screens, rather than the main door, then they will be more careful.
  •  The children also needs to be taught that you can not undone what you have entered once on the internet. The data is saved forever even if you delete the history. Experts can recover it any time and things can be turned over beyond your imaginations.

These are some of the basic lessons which your child needs to know about online privacy. There still a lot can be added but this hopefully this article will somewhat be helpful in opening up your mind and transfer positive teachings to your kids.
