Easing the K-12 Transition Through Learning Centers

Education and Training

The Philippines has finally implemented and followed the K12 academic curriculum. Before that, the country was the last in Asia and also one of the three worldwide that followed a pre-university cycle of 10 years.

The change has no doubt caused a major shift, receiving positive feedback, as well as criticism and backlash since its implementation four years ago.

It also has its drawbacks for both institutions and the students. For schools and teachers, there has been a need for more teachers, more classrooms, and more learning materials. For affected students, they have an additional of two years in school.

The Advantages of the K-12 Curriculum

However, there are multiple advantages to the new curriculum. The rising need for teachers opens career opportunities to Education graduates and those who seek a career in teaching. Schools are also improved with the addition of new classrooms and learning materials.

When it comes to the students, they are given a clearer path with the introduction of the academic strands. Like college, students are given the chance as early as their senior years in high school to focus on their chosen specialized track. This prepares them for the course that they wish to take in college and lessens the chances of students shifting between majors due to indecisiveness.

Preparing and Focusing on the Foundation

However, this shift in the curriculum is certainly no walk in the park for all parties involved - administrators, teachers, parents, and students. The change also raises the standards and parents should be preparing their children even during the first stage - kindergarten.

It is at this stage that children should be given much attention to develop their learning skills, especially in subjects such as mathematics which is no doubt one of the most struggling concepts for children.

Such is the reason that we have established IZUMI Philippines, a learning center for tutoring in Taguig.

If you are a Filipino parent concerned about the development of your child’s academic path, here are some of the advantages that may help in convincing you to enroll your child for additional education from a learning center.

#1 More Focused Learning

One of the cons of the influx of students due to the curriculum shift is that classrooms can become more congested. The effect of this is that teachers may find it harder to accommodate each and every student’s needs. With a learning center and tutoring, however, classrooms are not congested and the tutor has the opportunity to go from one student to the next to cater to their questions and further explain the lesson.

#2 Less Pressure For Students

In a large classroom setting, students no doubt feel pressure when amongst their peers, especially during activities like pop quizzes, where students do their best to be the first to answer for plus points. This can lower the confidence and self-esteem of those who have not yet mastered the lesson and this trait may be carried by the students as they progress to higher levels of education.

In learning centers, students are not pressured and are instead encouraged to take their time in answering problems. More importantly, the focus is not solely on getting the answer. Rather, they are also encouraged to analyze the problem and the solution. They are also taught to collaborate with their peers and at times, to have friendly competitions.

#3 Helps Students Prepare from the Academic Challenges Set by K-12

Evidently, lessons at all levels become more complex and there have been many changes with the focus of the lessons. By enrolling your child in a learning center that improves their strengths and helps them improve at their weaknesses, they can be more prepared and ready for the transition of the new academic curriculum. As their grade level increases in the future, they will already be prepared and will have learned strategies that will help them to better understand their lessons and brand new concepts.
