THREE "INDIE" SOCIAL NETWORKS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

Most of us know that virtually every social media marketing strategy should in some way incorporate all three of the current "big" social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Yet it's important to remember that there are hundreds of other social networking sites on the web, many of which can be just as useful when thoughtfully incorporated into your strategy. Here’s a list of three “indie” social networks that may be useful to your business:

 

 

Daily Booth

You may have heard of DailyBooth, as it went through something of a “fad” phase several years ago. Despite dying down somewhat, DailyBooth is still alive and kicking, and can be a very useful platform for businesses that prefer visual content. DailyBooth encourages its users to post a picture every day of either yourself or something relevant to your life. Over time, this consistent posting of images creates a sort of timeline that connections can browse and comment on. Different businesses can use DailyBooth in different ways. Restaurants can use DailyBooth to photograph and showcase different menu items, daily/weekly specials, events, drinks, and more. Retail can use DailyBooth to post photos of items on sale or new arrivals. I’m not going to list all the potential uses for DailyBooth for every type of business, as they are virtually endless. If you believe visual content could be used to boost your business, then DailyBooth is likely the way to go.

 

Scribd

Advertised as a “social publishing” site, Scribd is designed so that users can easily share documents with followers and the general public. Scribd supports all of the most popular document formats. Aesthetically and functionally, Scribd borrows heavily from Twitter. Users can choose to “follow” other users, and documents posted by those you’re following show up in your feed. Because Scribd is rather a niche, only businesses that release a fair amount of public documents will find the social networking aspect of Scribd particularly useful. However, Scribd is phenomenal at hosting documents for virtually any business. Documents uploaded to Scribd can be shared on any other social network, and Scribd’s intuitive document viewer can be embedded in virtually any webpage via HTML.

 

Four Square

FourSquare is a location-based social network. Users virtually “check-in” to locations via their mobile device, and in exchange receive points, badges, and other virtual prizes. Businesses can also offer special deals to customers who check-in via FourSquare. FourSquare can be very useful for brick-and-mortar businesses that rely on local and repeat business. FourSquare users can opt (and many do) to automatically post all FourSquare check-ins to Facebook and/or Twitter, meaning every time someone checks-in to your business location via FourSquare, your business is advertised to that persons entire social network. Facebook offers a similar check-in service, however with 10,000,000 registered users, FourSquare is still king of location-based social networking.
