Myths About Air Conditioning Systems

Construction

There are many things that have been said or are being said about your air conditioning system. You have probably read or have been offered advice on what to do and what not to do with your air conditioning system.

Here are some myths and misconceptions we commonly hear about air conditioning systems and what we can possibly learn from them.

  • Using an air conditioner will give you cold. This is absolutely false. The reality of this is that it has been confirmed by the AARP that while becoming chilled may make you more prone or susceptible to illness, the common cold is caused by a virus and not as a result of cold temperature. You can go ahead and turn on your air conditioner. Keep your home clean. Remember to adhere to personal hygiene.

  • It is a waste of time and money to have an air conditioning system serviced. The truth is that your air conditioner needs to be serviced just like humans needs food. Regular cleaning helps to keep your unit running smoothly and efficiently. It also provides an opportunity to detect the problems that might have developed over time. Ignoring servicing and regular maintenance can mean you spend more on repairs and your air conditioner’s lifespan will be shortened.

  • You can save money by turning the air conditioner off or setting the thermostat extra high when you leave the house, then turning the thermostat down when you return. These again are false. When you come home to a hot house, the air conditioner has to work much harder to cool the place down. Turning the thermostat lower won’t help because most air conditioner units only run at one speed, so a lower setting simply forces the machine to run longer.

  • It is cheaper to leave the thermostat at the same temperature all day, even when you are at work. This is also not true. Using a programmable thermostat can let the house warm up while you are gone, then start cooling things down before you get home. This allows you unit to take a break when it doesn’t need to use the energy.

  • You will become more comfortable if you just get the bigger air conditioner. Air conditioners don’t just cool air, they dehumidify it. Otherwise, your house would be clammy and cool. Size of the air conditioner doesn’t matter. A properly sized air conditioner is one that is chosen to fit your home. These include features like insulation, windows, air leakage, roof characteristics, etc.

  • The air conditioner won’t run as much if you keep ceiling fans turned on. This is also a myth. The use of ceiling fans are not to to cool air but to circulate it around. Use of ceiling fan when you are in the room but turn them off to save electricity when you are leaving. The best way to save money on cooling your home is to use the air conditioner sensibly. And don’t forget to have your air conditioner inspected for proper functionality and any necessary repairs from an AC specialist in your area.
