Off the leash and tell you to click here

Most MMOs lead you on a campaign that introduces the most important characters, activities and areas, and only then do they take off the leash and tell you to click here do anything you want. That last bit is where Old School Runescape begins. It is a sandbox MMORPG that's deliberately grindy and intimidatingly hands-off. You go through a five-minute tutorial which teaches you the absolute bare minimum and then you're unceremoniously dropped into the hometown of Lumbridge. It's the type of game where you have to bookmark the wiki until you can get anywhere. But if you are eager to push through the harsh learning curve, and should you find Runescape's freewheeling sense of adventure liberating rather than overwhelming, you may well find your eternally game.

Part of this motive Old School Runescape is so bad at explaining itself boils to its own heritage. There was just Runescape. But following a major update completely overhauled Runescape and turned it into what has become colloquially known as Runescape 3, Jagex ran a survey to determine if players wanted independent servers where they could play Runescape as it was back in the day. Almost 500,000 people said yes, and Old School Runescape was first born. So, the threadbare tutorial is much more than sufficient for those who've played Runescape before (such as myself). Nevertheless, Old School could stand to Buy OSRS gold guide new players somewhat better, since it's totally unlike other MMOs.

Everyone has the exact same 23 abilities, which could broadly be grouped into battle abilities like Strength and Ranged, crafting skills such as Herblore and Fletching, and gathering skills such as Fishing and Mining. All skills start at level one and move around 99 as you gain expertise by dealing damage, crafting potions, catching fish and so on. To put it differently, you're not a mage, you've got high Magic. You're not a warrior, you have high Attack, Strength, and Defence. Your abilities reflect your playstyle, however there isn't a difficult division between personality types. Everybody is invited to level all their skills, and the end goal for the majority of players is to find all of them to 99.
