What is Scopolamine?
Scopolamine is a tropane alkaloid found in plants from the Solanaceae family. Chemically, it is classified as a deliriant with dissociative and amnestic properties. It works by blocking the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain which are involved in the integration of sensory input and the formation and retrieval of memories. By blocking these receptors, scopolamine interferes with an individual's ability to voluntarily control their bodily functions and process information.

Medical Uses
In clinical settings, scopolamine is used to treat motion sickness and postoperative nausea. It works effectively for these purposes due to its anticholinergic properties that suppress the vestibular system and reduce gut motility. Scopolamine patches and eye drops are commonly prescribed to prevent nausea during pregnancy or after surgery. While safe and effective for approved medical uses, scopolamine can become dangerous if misused or abused.

Effects of Scopolamine Intoxication
When taken recreationally or forcibly, scopolamine produces a state of delirium characterized by confusion, disorientation and memory loss. Victims experience difficulty forming new memories during intoxication. Higher doses lead to hallucinations, paranoid delusions, raised heart rate and dilated pupils. Victims essentially lose their free will and enter a state similar to drunkenness where they are easy to manipulate. They blindly follow suggestions and commands given by the assailant. This mind-altering property has enabled criminals to easily dupe victims into handing over money, revealing PIN numbers or having non-consensual surgery.

Scopolamine as a Date Rape Drug
Due to its amnesic and compliance-inducing effects, Scopolamine presents a significant danger as a date rape drug. Perpetrators exploit the anticholinergic delirium it causes to sexually assault intoxicated victims who are helpless to resist or remember the attack due to intoxication-induced amnesia. Victims often regain consciousness unaware of what transpired during the period of scopolamine delirium. This allows rapists and criminals to evade culpability even after committing egregious crimes.

“Devil’s Breath” - The Street Name
In parts of Latin America where scopolamine abuse is rampant, it has earned the ominous street name “Devil’s Breath” alluding to its mind-controlling powers. Criminal networks have sprung up who prey on victims by blowing scopolamine powder into their faces using compressed air or spraying it as an aerosol. Within minutes, victims enter a zombified state fully susceptible to suggestion. Their ATM cards, pins and valuables are stolen while they remain oblivious to what is transpiring. Stories of entire lives and inheritances stripped away in a scopolamine-induced haze are sadly common in Colombia and other countries.

The Manufacture and Spread
While naturally occurring tropane alkaloids from plants in the nightshade family have long been exploited, the booming scopolamine trade has involved sophisticated drug networks manufacturing pureextracts for abuse and crime. Clandestine labs extract scopolamine from Datura plants and refine it into a fine powder ideal for easy dispersion and high potency. This scopolamine is trafficked across borders, feeding criminal economies and preying on vulnerable communities. With rising globalization and movement of goods and people, scopolamine’s spread as a weaponized drug is a growing public health concern.

Policy Solutions and Prevention
Given the immense dangers posed by scopolamine, a two-pronged approach is needed involving harm reduction and law enforcement. On one hand, educating vulnerable populations about the risks of ingesting unknown substances and being wary of strangers approaching can help prevent victimization. Simultaneously, coordinated international cooperation is required to crack down on criminal networks manufacturing and distributing scopolamine. Tracking finances and supply chains can dismantle the infrastructure enabling scopolamine trafficking. Though challenging, determined policy efforts are necessary to curb the exploitation of this dangerous drug and protect communities
