External Nasal Splints Market Growth & Demand

Market-Research

External nasal splints are used to provide protection and support following nose surgery. It is majorly used in after reconstructive or cosmetic rhinoplasty for splinting of nasal dorsum. Splints that allow users to undo if something goes wrong during the surgery and are highly stretchable are preferred over Plaster of Paris bandaging. Some of the external nasal splints offer two degrees of elasticity for accommodating various types of noses and are phthalate and latex free. It is available in four sizes, having self-adhesive back and self-adhesive dorsum foam pad that provide additional comfort.

There are various benefits of external nasal splints based on the material used in manufacturing. Majorly, materials used are thermoplastic and aluminum. When padded aluminum is bonded to a thin & flexible aluminum, it offers support in easy applications and comfort at the time of removal. A high density polyurethane foam is bonded to a thin flexible aluminum in single-use external nasal splints. Layers of an adhesive film are placed at the face of foam and protected by a release paper. A finger lift edge is used to construct this paper for facilitate easy peel. In addition, aluminum splints are easily malleable, non-sterile, and provide patient comfort. The ductile nature of the aluminum backing enables the accuracy in splint fitting. But, care needs to be taken to prevent the adhesive layer of the splint to come into direct contact with the skin for long term.

On the other hand, thermoplastic substances change its consistency and stability under the influence of temperature. The thermoplastic material changes its color from white into transparent when heated in a water bath. Thermoplastic nasal splints become ductile after heating and regain strength rapidly during cooling phase. In this process, the material is cooled to set the product in the required shape. It offers an accuracy in fitting to the patients for an external nasal splint and stable protection.

Sportsmen and athletes are wearing external nasal splints. Scientists have evaluated the effects of these splints on nasal resistance during isotonic and isometric exercises. The study examines whether the exercises are affected by wearing external nasal splints. 20 sportsmen and athletes were tested who did not have rhinitis. Measurements of nasal resistance were taken before and after exercise using an anterior rhinomanometer. The measurements were taken with and without the external nasal splints. During isometric exercise, it was found that external nasal splints considerably minimize nasal resistance. During isotonic exercise, nasal resistance decreased at rest but negligible while performing.
