2015 was a special year for the God Eater game series from Bandai Namco Entertainment . In 2015, the God Eater game series commemorated the 5th anniversary since the game was first released. Various new projects have also been released, starting with the new game God Eater 2: Rage Burst , and God Eater: Ressurection . In addition, in celebration of the game series' 5th anniversary, in the summer of 2015, animation studio Ufotable presented an anime series adaptation.
Produced by studio Ufotable , the anime series is being directed by Takayuki Hirao ( Futakoi Alternative, Paranoia Agent, Texhnolyze ) with the help of Keita Shimizu ( Fate/Stay Night – Unlimited Blades Works, Fate/Zero ) in terms of character designs. Some of the voice actors involved in this anime series include Ryuichi Kijima (Lenka Utsugi), Daisuke Sakaguchi (Kouta Fujiki), Hiroaki Hirata (Lindow Amamiya), Kazuya Nakai (Soma Shicksal), Maaya Sakamoto (Alisa Illinichina Amelia).
The God Eater anime series takes the story in the first game ( Gods Eater Burst in the English version of the game). It is told that in the future the earth will be ravaged by the appearance of a mysterious creature named Aragami. The appearance of the Aragami with all the dangers it has threatens the lives of humans and other organisms on earth. To fight the dangerous threat from the Aragami, a special unit was formed called Fenrir . Fenrir is a unit that establishes a facility to accommodate humans who survive Aragami attacks and live in safer places. In addition, to fight back against the Aragami, Fenrir also has a special army called God Eaters, who has a mainstay weapon called the God Arc to defeat Aragami who cannot be attacked by any weapon other than the God Arc .
Lenka Utsugi, the protagonist of this anime series is one of the survivors of Aragami's attack. To take revenge on the monsters, he also made up his mind to wear the God Arc and become a God Eater. However, due to his strong ambition to fight Aragami, he had caused trouble in the Far East branch of Fenrir's office by taking to the battlefield where he was not supposed to be. On the battlefield, he proves that he is a New-Type God Eater , who can bring hope to humanity amid the threat of Aragami.
The first time I heard about the animation studio Ufotable , I couldn't escape the various previous anime series that had been produced such as Fate/Zero & Fate/Stay Night and Kara no Kyoukai . This animation studio usually comes with a visual style that matches and is in tune with the previous series. But in this God Eater anime series, the visuals that are displayed are quite different.
The God Eater anime series was released not long after the Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works anime series aired . Although the show is not too far away, the visuals in these two anime are very different. This God Eater anime series presents a visual texture, especially in the character designs that look quite different in terms of coloring. The color composition and shading of the characters in this anime will at first glance appear to have a strong and very contrasting impression. This visual style can be considered as something that is quite experimental, it may be liked because it is different, but it can be a bit less liked because it looks weird.
The thing that becomes the focus of an anime adaptation is the relationship between anime adaptations and the original media. In various cases, an anime adaptation gets attention because it can bring the original material into the adaptation, there is also an adaptation that is considered to be different or is considered to violate the original material. Regarding faithful adaptation and originality, there are two swords in the work of adaptation.
Then what about the adaptation in this God Eater anime? The adaptation of God Eater from a game to an anime series is packaged quite nicely. Here, it is not only presented content that is stick to the origin for the first game, but also new content that is not in the game. And all of this can come together to make a harmony in a unified whole series.
The original payload that is clearly visible is the main character, Lenka Utsugi. The first time I heard the news that the God Eater game would be turned into an anime, what the writer thought was, who would be the main character? What is Soma? Or Alisa? Or Lindow? However, this anime actually gives the original character as the main character, a character that never existed in the game. And is the use of a new character as a fairly central main character disturbing? It doesn't seem like that because even if you play the game, players will create their own character as the main character. This Lenka Utsugi figure can be seen that way, it can be seen as new content in the anime, but it can also be interpreted that this is a character created by players to run the story in the God Eater game.
